Watch the 2026 Solar Eclipse from Poole Harbour

There’s something truly magical about looking up at the sky and witnessing one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

On Wednesday 12th August 2026, the skies above the UK will play host to a deep partial solar eclipse, and here at Coastal Cruises, we’re inviting you to experience it from one of the most spectacular locations in Dorset – the beautiful waters of Poole Harbour.

Why is this Solar Eclipse So Special?

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, partially blocking the Sun from view.

During this event, more than 90% of the Sun will be covered from our part of the UK. As the eclipse reaches its peak, daylight will noticeably dim, creating an unforgettable atmosphere as the Sun becomes a dramatic crescent hanging low in the evening sky.

It’s one of those moments that reminds us just how incredible our universe really is.

Why Watch It from a Boat?

While many people will be searching for a good viewpoint along the coast, our guests will already be in one of the best seats in the house.

Poole Harbour offers wide, open views across the water with very little to interrupt the western horizon. Instead of standing in crowded viewing spots, you’ll be relaxing aboard one of our comfortable passenger boats, surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the harbour.

Imagine enjoying a refreshing drink from our onboard bar as the Sun slowly transforms before your eyes, with the calm waters reflecting the changing evening light.

It’s not just about watching the eclipse – it’s about making an evening of it.

Our Sunset Solar Eclipse Cruise

To mark this remarkable occasion, we’re running a special Sunset Solar Eclipse Cruise.

  • A unique opportunity to witness one of the UK’s most exciting natural events of 2026.

Viewing the Eclipse Safely

Because this is a solar eclipse, it’s extremely important to protect your eyesight.

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse, you must bring your own ISO 12312-2 certified solar eclipse glasses.

Please remember:

  • Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for viewing a solar eclipse.
  • Cameras, binoculars and telescopes should only be used with approved solar filters.
  • Children should always be supervised while viewing the Sun.

Your safety is our priority, and we want everyone to enjoy this incredible event responsibly.

What if It’s Cloudy?

As with any astronomical event, the weather plays an important role.

While we all have our fingers crossed for clear skies, visibility of the eclipse cannot be guaranteed. However, even if the clouds decide to make an appearance, you’ll still enjoy a relaxing summer evening cruising around one of the world’s largest natural harbours.

After all, spending a summer evening on the water with great company, beautiful scenery and a drink in hand is never a bad way to spend your time.
