So, you’ve booked your first coastal cruise—or you’re thinking about it—and now you’re wondering…
What actually happens?
Where do you go?
What if you don’t know what to do?
Will you accidentally stand somewhere you shouldn’t?
Don’t worry—you’re not alone. Lots of our passengers are first-timers, and we’ve made this guide to walk you through exactly what to expect, from arrival to sailing off into the horizon.
Arriving at the Quay — The Adventure Starts Here
Your cruise begins before you even step onboard.
We recommend arriving around 15 minutes before departure. That gives you time to find us, check in, and take a few photos before boarding begins.
If you’re joining us from Poole Quay, you’ll spot our blue kiosk — with a friendly face ready to greet you. It’s hard to miss, especially once you see boats gently bobbing nearby and passengers gathering with that excited “we’re going on a boat!” energy.
Arriving early also means you can relax instead of rushing—and nobody enjoys the panic-run down the quay while the boat crew watches.
Remember if you have booked anywehere other than our website you need to ‘check-in’ to validate your ticket at our blue kiosk.
Boarding the Boat — Easier Than You Think
When it’s time to board, our crew will guide you safely onto the vessel using the gangway.
If you’ve never boarded a boat before, don’t worry—it’s straightforward, and we’re always nearby to lend a hand if needed. Families, older passengers, and first-time sailors board every day, and we make sure everyone gets onboard comfortably.
Once you step aboard, you’ll probably feel that little moment of excitement—the one where it suddenly feels real.
You’re going sailing.
Finding Your Spot — Inside or Outside?
One of the first things people notice onboard is the choice of seating.
All our boats offer:
- Indoor seating — warm, sheltered, and comfortable
- Outdoor seating — perfect for sunshine, sea air, and photos
Some people head straight outside to feel the breeze, while others settle inside with a drink and enjoy the view from the windows.
There’s no right or wrong choice—and you’re free to move around during the trip.
Pro tip: If you love photos, outside seating usually gives the best views.
Setting Sail — That Magical Moment
Then comes the moment everyone waits for.
The engines gently hum, the ropes are released, and slowly—almost magically—the quay begins to drift away behind you.
It’s a special moment, even if you’ve sailed before. For first-timers, it’s often the moment where smiles get bigger, cameras come out, and excitement really kicks in.
Before long, you’ll be gliding across the water, watching the coastline unfold around you.
What You’ll See Along the Way
Every cruise is slightly different, but there’s always plenty to enjoy.
Depending on the route, you might see:
- Beautiful coastline views
- Historic landmarks
- Busy harbour life
- Seabirds gliding overhead
- The occasional surprise wildlife sighting
And yes—we do get asked about dolphins a lot. While we can’t promise them, when they do appear, it turns into one of those unforgettable moments people talk about long after the trip ends.
Even without dolphins, the scenery alone makes the journey worthwhile.
Life Onboard — Comfort and Relaxation
Once you’re settled in, it’s time to relax and enjoy the experience.
Most cruises offer refreshments onboard, so you can treat yourself to a drink or snack while watching the world drift by.
There are toilets onboard (always a reassuring detail to know), and plenty of space to sit comfortably throughout the trip.
If you brought children along, you’ll probably find them asking questions, pointing at boats, and soaking up the adventure.
And if you brought your camera—or your phone—you’ll likely fill it with photos before you know it.
What If the Weather Changes?
Ah yes… the British weather.
Even if the forecast looks promising, conditions can change quickly on the coast. That’s why we always recommend bringing a jacket, just in case.
Rain doesn’t usually stop the fun—most boats have indoor seating, so you’ll stay dry while still enjoying the trip.
And if weather conditions ever become unsafe, safety always comes first. We’ll make alternative arrangements or offer refunds when necessary.
Seasickness — Should You Be Worried?
Most passengers feel perfectly fine during our cruises, especially on calmer routes.
However, if you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s always wise to take precautions beforehand—just in case.
Helpful tips include:
- Sitting inside near the centre of the boat
- Looking at the horizon
- Staying hydrated
- Taking motion sickness tablets if needed
For most people, though, the experience is smooth, comfortable, and very enjoyable.
The Journey Back — Don’t Forget to Look Around
As the cruise comes to an end, you’ll begin to recognise familiar sights again as the quay comes back into view.
It’s often a surprisingly peaceful moment—people chatting, sharing photos, or simply enjoying the final few minutes on the water.
And quite often, we hear the same words as passengers step off:
“That was brilliant—we’ll definitely do that again.”
Final Thoughts — Your First Cruise Won’t Be Your Last
Your first coastal cruise is often the start of many more.
There’s something about being out on the water—the views, the fresh air, the gentle movement—that makes it a memorable experience for families, couples, and friends alike.
So if you’re feeling a little unsure about booking your first trip, take this as your sign to give it a go.
We’ll handle the details.
You just turn up, step onboard, and enjoy the ride.
We can’t wait to welcome you aboard.
